2014 – Rated “Outstanding!”, “Karl and Coco Umiker were competitive cyclists at the University of Idaho when they struck up a friendship with another rider, Dick Beightol. Little did they know they it would blossom into a grower/winemaker relationship that has helped Clearwater Canyon earn West Coast acclaim for its work with this obscure Bordeaux variety. Beightol’s Phinny Hill Vineyard in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills, across the highway from famed Champoux Vineyard, ranks among the premier plantings for Carménère, and the Umikers’ 17-month approach of 30% new American oak allows for classic aromas of green peppercorns alongside dried strawberry, dried cherry and orange oil. It’s a suave red with flavors of cassis, red cherry and bell pepper that fans of Cabernet Franc will particularly appreciate. The Umikers suggest serving it with venison, and their popular wines are available through their Lewiston, Idaho, winery or throughout the Gem State via Idaho Wine Merchant’s distribution. Last year, Clearwater Canyon Cellars sold through all of their wines, but the Carm might be its most sought-after.” – Great Northwest Wine

2014 – 18.5+/20 points. “This is a fine version of the “lost grape of Bordeaux.” It shows a deep crimson color and seductive aromas of raspberries, old tree cherries, black currants, crushed roses, mulberry, sandalwood, sweet tobacco, violets and oriental incense. The medium bodied flavors are alluring, with lavish fruits that are interwoven with black licorice, dark cocoa, French roast and Horse Heaven wind blown earth. The back reveals sensations of pressed berries, framboise liqueur, crème de cassis and semi dried cherries. The alcohol registers at 15.1% but is balanced by bright fruit acids on the lingering, slightly nutted sweet-dry tannin finish. The lovely aromatics give it a plus”. –Rand Sealey, Review of Washington Wines

2013 – Rated “Excellent”, “Lewis-Clark Valley vintner Coco Umiker continues her excellence with this lesser-known Bordeaux variety from Phinny Hill Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills. She blends in Malbec (11%) from Verhey Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills above the Yakima Valley, which adds a sense of elegance throughout. The theme of red cherry, cassis and raspberry includes a pinch of black pepper and fresh oregano, which gives it a herbaceous charm that appeals to many fans of leafy Cabernet Franc. It’s a rich on the entry, shows refinement on the midpalate and finishes with gorgeous balance and spice.”  –Great Northwest Wine

2012 – Rated “Excellent”, “This makes two years in a row earning Platinum for this wine from Lewiston, Idaho. Owners Karl and Coco Umiker bring in grapes from one of Washington’s top vineyards and have crafted a beautifully balanced wine with subtle aromas and flavors of black currant, black olive, thyme and sage. The moderate tannins provide perfect structure for this lesser-known Bordeaux variety.”  –Wine Press Northwest

2012 – Rated “Exceptional” – “Sensational stylish Beaujolais-style red wine that has traces of pepper and a floral note you rarely see in red wines. From an Idaho winery, a dramatic new style of wine.” –Dan Berger of
