Fall Release 2026 Newsletter

Celebrating 10 years of the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA
What a proud milestone! Ten years ago, the Lewis-Clark Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) was finally etched into the world wine map. This recognition was a long time coming. Karl and I, along with Mike & Melissa Sanborn from Colter’s Creek, worked for years to compile data and historical documents and consult experts to create the final federal petition—making the case for why our beloved Lewis-Clark Valley deserved an AVA designation. On April 20, 2016 the federal government approved our petition for the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA!
It’s been thrilling to watch the ripple effect of establishing the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA. Karl and I produced wine for 12 LONG years (est. 2004) before the AVA designation—during that time we rarely caught the attention of wine experts and collectors. Since 2016 a steady stream of wine aficionados from near and far has journeyed here to explore the regional wines of the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA. To the wine industry, an AVA designation is much like a National Park designation for a landscape—it recognizes a place as distinctive and a national treasure worth experiencing.
The wine industry of the Lewis-Clark Valley has seen many changes since the first commercial vineyard plantings back in 1872 by Frenchman Louis Delsol—vineyards and wineries have come, and some have gone—Prohibition was not helpful to the early days of the wine industry in the USA. For as long as there has been wine on earth, there too has been expansion and contraction of vineyard acreage and wine production across the globe. The perseverance of any wine region depends on favorable weather, politics and the enduring support of wine lovers.
Winemaking is an ancient art that has stood the test of time, employing many of the same principal tools and methods for thousands of years. New shiny beverages in cans and cocktail glasses can grab our attention. In the end, there is a primal fascination with the beauty of farming and fermenting grapes into something extraordinary that always brings us back to the table with a bottle of wine.
